Travel to the JCC

We got to visit the JCC (Jewish Community Center) in Mullica Hill. I had the opportunity to make slab bowls with senior citizens. It was me, my boss Abbie and her two kids, Lacey and Sydney who went on the travel. The travel started at 10:30 and ended at 12. We have 42 pieces made and the place was packed. We started off where all four of us went to different tables and demonstrated how to make a slab bowl.
You start off with wedging your clay. Then you roll out your clay with a rolling pin. We hand each person a plastic bowl that is covered in parchment paper. After the clay is rolled into a slab, they flip there plastic bowl over and trace the edge on the bowl. Then you place the clay inside the bowl. After that they can begin designing. We brought different cookie cutters so that everyone can add different shapes to there bowl if they choose. We also had some people get fancy with how they designed the edge. Some of them made the edge look kind of like a pie crust. It was fun to see all of them create their own pieces and all of them seemed to have a pretty good time.
Before we began the people in charge at the JCC announced that one of the men there, Herb, had just turned 96. Can you believe that? I had him in my group and because of his age, he could really hear me well but it was a new experience for me. I felt kind of bad because I knew he was struggling a little bit but the woman he was with helped him a lot. It seemed like he could understand her a little better.
After everyone finished making their bowls, we got out the paints and had them start painting their bowls. They all turned out really nice. We brought a lot of colors so everyone had a lot to choose from. We just put all the colors on palettes and passed them out.

Overall the travel went really well. It was nice to see how big a travel could actually get. It was a little overwhelming but it was good to go to and have the chance to experience. When it was all done though, me and Lacey were really upset that they didn’t offer us any leftover brownies. :(

  1. Did you learn anything from Herb? I feel like maybe he had some cool stories

    1. He actually was really quiet. He didn't really talk much at all.
